UNESCO DIRECTOR GENERAL LAUDS PM FOR HER CONTRIBUTION IN WOMEN’S EDUCATION
UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova was today all praise for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her outstanding contribution to promoting girls and women education and raising literacy rate in Bangladesh.
The director general of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) came up with the appreciation when she paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister at her Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban office this evening.
After the meeting, PM’s Press Secretary AKM Shameem Chowdhury briefed reporters.
The UNESCO DG also lauded Sheikh Hasina as she was nominated as a champion head of government by the UN Secretary General for his Global Education First Initiative (GEFI).
Irina Bokova thanked the Prime Minister for inaugurating today’s
International Conference on “Girls’ and Women’s Literacy and Education: Foundations for Sustainable Development”.
She also eulogised the Prime Minister for her participation in the first-ever Girl Summit in London this year, saying her presence made the Summit successful.
Sheikh Hasina sought continued support of the UNESCO director general for Bangladesh to play a meaningful role in further advancing GEFI objectives of inclusive quality global education.
Talking about Bangladesh’s tremendous progress in education sector, she said, after the independence, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman nationalized primary education and made it compulsory in the constitution.
Sheikh Hasina thanked the UNESCO DG for presenting her the “Tree of Peace” memento in recognition of her outstanding contribution to promotion of girls’ and women education in Bangladesh.
The Prime Minister also extended her gratitude to UNESCO for providing assistance for the development of the International Mother Language Institute in Dhaka and sought more assistance for its further development.
In reply, Irina Bokova assured the Prime Minister of providing allout support to this end.
PM’s Principal Secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikder and Bangladesh Ambassador to France M Shahidul Islam were present, among others.
