‘SOUTH – SOUTH COOPERATION MUST FOR DEVELOPMENT’
Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN AK Abdul Momen has said that South-South cooperation is “not an option, but a must” to enhance international cooperation for development in the present context.
He was opening the 2014 Global South-South Development EXPO in Washington on Monday as the President of the UN High-level Committee on South-South Cooperation.
“The sooner we realize this (it’s must) and the sooner the evolving global development architecture recognizes its importance, the better we are in structuring a holistic development process for the developing world,” he said.
Bangladesh is one of the strong supporters of south-south cooperation, which means co-operation among developing countries.
In February next year, Dhaka will host a high-level brainstorming session on the issue ahead of the post-2015 development agenda that will be adopted in the Sep UN General Assembly.
Ambassador Momen said the magnitude of the contribution by the South to global economic activities had been recognised in the expression of “the new geography of trade”.
“Cooperation among developing countries is changing the landscape of international relations, particularly in trade, financial flows and regional integration”.
He, however, said that it was “not a substitute rather a complement” to North-South cooperation, meaning, between developed and developing countries.
The week-long expo is being held at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington with the support of the UN Office for South-South Cooperation.
UN agencies, members of the civil society, NGOs, business leaders, experts, and delegates around the world have joined the annual expo.
The Bangladesh permanent mission to the UN in New York, meanwhile, in a media release citing sources said that Bangladesh might be awarded with the ‘visionary award’ during the expo.
And it will be due to the current government’s efforts to eradicate poverty and lifting standards of the marginalised people’s living by spreading ICT, health services and social safety net across the country.
It again, citing sources, said that PM’s ICT adviser Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy, who is also her son, can receive the award on behalf of her on Nov 21.
