The European Union has set up a business council in Bangladesh to “strengthen” the economic relations.

The 28-nation bloc is the largest export market for Bangladesh where all its products enter without duty.

But the EU says this trading status has “yet to develop into a global and matured economic relation”.

The main aim of the European Union Business Council Bangladesh, is “to identify the obstacles to trade and investment between the EU and Bangladesh”, the EU delegation in Dhaka said in a statement.

It is also being set up to “support the EU in its discussions with the government of Bangladesh and other stakeholders on the ways and means to strengthen the economic relations”.

2-01_Election-Commission_110913Eight EU countries – UK, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Spain, and the Netherlands – which have missions in Dhaka, are the members along with their bilateral chambers of commerce with Bangladesh.

This council will “complement” the bilateral activities of the EU member states and their chambers of commerce that are also engaged in trade promotion.

The EU said the new council began its journey with a meeting on Wednesday in a Dhaka hotel.

Representatives from the bilateral chambers were also present.

The meeting summaries will be shared with the Bangladesh government representatives on Feb 27 when the ‘Trade Sub-Group’ of the EU-Bangladesh Joint Commission meets in Dhaka.

An executive of a bilateral chamber told bdnews24.com that this council would basically act as an “advocacy” forum.
