Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) President Saber Hossain Chowdhury, while emphasising implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has said the opportunity to steer the world onto a safer, more sustainable, inclusive and prosperous path does not come often.

He was addressing the plenary session of the UN General Assembly on the opening day on Friday, a media statement from the Office of the IPU President said.

World leaders on Friday adopted the SDGs, to be implemented over the next 15 years, to combat poverty, inequality and climate change.

“Never before has the focus on people been so closely woven with themes of planet, peace, prosperity and partnerships and summit presents an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to steer the world onto a safer, more sustainable, inclusive and prosperous path”, the statement quoted Chowdhury as saying in his speech.

“This goal is a powerful signal that we are serious about changing the way we do business at highest political level”, he said.

According to the statement, he concluded his address by urging the governments to “provide visionary political leadership to propel the SDGs forward and to turn words into action.”

Established in 1889, IPU, an international organisation of parliaments of 166 countries, supports the efforts of and works in close co-operation with the UN, whose objectives it shares.
