‘Valued friend’ of India, Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina meets Indian Prime Minister Modi in New York

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has met Narendra Modi in New York on the sidelines of the 70th UNGA in what the Indian leader described as “yet another productive meeting”.

“Yet another productive meeting with PM Sheikh Hasina. We discussed India-Bangladesh ties,” Modi tweeted after the meeting.

The announcement about the meeting came from an earlier tweet in which he described her as a “valued friend”.

“After the business meeting, meeting with a neighbour and valued friend,” the first tweet said about the bilateral meeting on Thursday that followed a roundtable Modi attended on financial sector.

The meeting took place at the iconic Waldorf Astoria hotel where both of them are staying.

Modi’s office released a photo where both leaders could be seen shaking hands.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, her son and adviser Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy, International Affairs Adviser Gowher Rizvi, Economic Affairs Adviser Mashiur Rahman joined Hasina during the delegation-level meeting.

India’s Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar, Ministry of External Affairs’ official spokesperson Vikas Swarup and Indian Ambassador to US Arun Kumar Singh were among those present with Modi.

Hasina MODI 20151Sheikh Hasina and Narendra Modi previously met in New Delhi on Aug 19 when she was there to attend the funeral of Suvra Mukherjee, the wife of Indian President Pranab Mukherjee.

In that meeting, the Bangladesh leader emphasized strengthening the trade relations and said the two neighbours could do ‘great things’ if their big markets were tapped together.

When Prime Minister Modi visited Dhaka in June, Bangladesh and India started process of implementing the 41-year old Land Boundary Agreement, ending stateless lives of more than 50,000 people in 161 enclaves on both sides of the border.

Both countries then said the land transfer deal took their ties to a new height.

Sheikh Hasina, on an 11-day visit, is leading a 60-member delegation to UN General Assembly.

The Bangladesh prime minister is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with presidents of the US and China.

World leaders will meanwhile meet in New York from Sep 25 to 27 to formulate the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the next 15 years.
